Origin of Islam
“…This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion.” (Koran: V 5:3)
The origin of Islam can be traced back to 7th century Saudi Arabia. Islam is thus the youngest of the great world religions. The prophet Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) (circa 570-632 A.D.) introduced Islam in 610 A.D. after experiencing what he claimed to be an angelic visitation. Muhammad (May Allah peace and blessings be upon him) dictated the Koran, the holy book of Islam, which Muslims believe to be the preexistent, perfect words of Allah. The origin of Islam is generally accredited to the prophet Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) but to the devout Muslim, Islam began long before Muhammad (May Allah peace and blessings be upon him) ever walked the earth. Islam is not a new religion, but the same truth that Allah revealed through all His prophets to every people. The Koran was dictated by Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) but, according to the Koran, it did not originate with Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him). The Koran testifies of itself that it was given by Allah through the angel Gabriel (Jibreel) to the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him).
“…Verily this is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds: with it came down the Spirit of Faith and Truth (Gabriel); to your heart and mind that you may admonish in the perspicuous Arabic tongue. Without doubt it is (announced) in the mystic Books of former peoples.” (Koran: V 26:192-196)
“…Say: Whosoever is an enemy to Gabriel (Jibreel) – for he brings the (revelation) to your heart by Allah’s will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and glad tidings for those who believe.” (Koran: V 2:97)
Historically, Islam began in Arabia in the Middle East. Now known as Saudi Arabia, this is where the prophet Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) was born, raised, lived, and died. Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) was chosen by Allah to deliver His Message of Peace, namely Islam. He was born in 570 C.E. (Common Era), in Mecca, a city in Arabia where he was orphaned. When he reached the stage of maturity, he married a young widow, yet he was never too much indulged in the mundane world. At the age of forty, he was given prophet hood and was entrusted with the Message of Islam. He started giving sermons, which were so inspiring that many people got attracted to his teachings. While he made so many followers, there were many who were against him. Thus, he moved to Medina, then known as Yathrib. This is considered as the beginning of Islamic calendar and marks the origin of Islam.
Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) is the very last prophet of Allah to mankind. He is the final Messenger of Allah. His message was and is still to the Christians, the Jews and the rest of mankind. He was sent to those religious people to inform them about the true mission of Jesus, Moses, David, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham (peace be upon them).
Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) is considered to be the summation and the culmination of all the prophets and messengers that came before him. He purified the previous messages from adulteration, and completed the Message of Allah to all humanities. He was entrusted with the power of explaining, interpreting, and living the teachings of the Koran. Till his death, Muhammad (may Allah peace and blessings be upon him) converted a majority of Arab population into Islam. The religion expanded as Arabs conquered countries like Syria, Iran, Egypt and later when they shifted to other countries.
